Lancaster County Prison Overview
Lancaster County Prison is the main adult detention facility for Lancaster County. The official county prison page lists Warden Cheryl Steberger, the prison address, the main phone line, the work-release line, and links to intake, visitation, finances, public resources, the prison board, and the county's "Who's In Jail?" path. The facility is overseen through the Lancaster County Prison Board rather than the Sheriff's Office, though the Sheriff's Office is important for warrants, fugitives, and CRIMEWATCH information.
The facility functions as both a county jail and county prison in common search language. Adults may arrive after a Lancaster County arrest, court commitment, bench warrant, probation or parole violation, detainer, local sentence, or work-release placement. The intake page uses the term "commitment" because staff must confirm that the person is being held under proper legal authority before the jail can process the person into custody.
The official prison page is the starting source for Lancaster County Prison records, visitation, finances, and prison-resource navigation.
The county page also links the public inmate-search route, which is the first custody check for current Lancaster County Prison inmates.
Lancaster County Prison Population
Lancaster County Prison's official capacity was reported as 1,085 in the 2019 Lancaster County Prison audit. The same audit reported 2019 average daily population of 785, a high count of 853 on February 6, 2019, a low count of 706 on December 31, 2019, and 6,006 total commitments during the year. The county's August 2025 prison-statistics PDF reported 2025 year-to-date average daily population of 796 through June 20, 2025.
The population includes pretrial detainees, county-sentenced inmates, work-release participants, probation or parole violators, people with detainers, and people awaiting classification. Vera reported a 2020 average jail population of 666 and a typical-day pretrial population of 369. Current official sources reviewed did not publish a live demographic table by sex, race, age, or charge level.
Who Is Held at Lancaster County Prison
Lancaster County Prison is not a state prison, federal prison, or ICE detention center. It is the local adult custody point for Lancaster County criminal-court authority. A person can be held there while awaiting arraignment, preliminary hearing, trial, sentencing, transfer, violation proceedings, or local sentence service. The classification process also accounts for out-of-county charges, state parole violations, detainers, mental and physical condition, prior incarceration, and conduct.
| Custody Type | Search Channel | Notes |

Find Someone in Lancaster County Prison
Current custody is searched through the county's Who's In Jail? page and the Lancaster County Prison Public Inmate Search. The portal displays an ATIMS landing screen and a captcha before search access. Lancaster County also provides a strong phone fallback at 717-299-7800, option 2. The county says the phone system lets callers search by name or date of birth, and DOB is recommended.
- Open the county "Who's In Jail?" page and read the CHRIA notice before entering the roster path.
- Complete the public inmate-search portal captcha if it appears.
- Search by the person's name, then use date of birth through the phone channel if the name is common.
- Confirm that the result is current Lancaster County Prison custody, not a state or federal record.
- Use Pennsylvania VINE for custody notifications and PADOC, BOP, or ICE if the person is not in county custody.
The official inmate-search portal screenshot shows why a phone fallback is part of the Lancaster County Prison lookup process.
The captcha gate helps protect the roster from scraping, but it can also block a routine family search on some browsers.
Lancaster County Prison Address
The official prison contact block should be used for facility calls, mailed legal correspondence, and visit planning. The county does not publish a separate public records counter schedule at the prison in the reviewed materials. Use the main line for custody and visit prompts, and use county Right-to-Know channels for older records or records that are not available through the roster.

Mail and Money at Lancaster County Prison
As of June 2024, Lancaster County Prison no longer accepts personal mail. Legal mail goes directly to Lancaster County Prison with the incarcerated individual's full name and ID number, marked LEGAL MAIL, at 625 E. King Street, Lancaster, PA 17602. Legal mail is delivered unopened so the recipient can open it in front of staff. Tablets are issued at commitment, and units have kiosks and telephones. Securus provides e-messaging, phone, tablet media, and video-visitation service elements.
| Service | Official Detail |
|---|---|
| Kiosk deposit | Cash, credit, or debit card at the LCP vestibule kiosk; service fee applies. |
| Online commissary | JailATM handles commissary deposits; service fee applies. |
| Securus funding | Phone calls, e-messaging stamps, and tablet media, not commissary. |
| Mail deposit | Money order or certified check to Lancaster County Prison, Attn: Inmate Accounts, with name and ID number. |
| Commitment processing fee | $35 on every newly incarcerated or re-incarcerated individual. |
| Medical fees | $3 nursing administrative fee and $5 NP, PA, doctor, dentist, or demanded doctor visit fee, with essential care not denied for inability to pay. |
The county's Finances page lists deposit options, release-fund handling, service fees, medical co-pays, and the commitment processing fee.
The finance rules matter before commissary deposits because financial privileges are restricted until the commitment fee is paid in full.
Booking at Lancaster County Prison
Lancaster County calls the start of custody a commitment. Staff verify legal authority, complete forms, search the person, inventory property, and check for weapons, contraband, vermin, cuts, and bruises. Staff fingerprint, photograph, video-image, iris-scan, and use other technical identifiers. Property is inventoried, and most valuable property should be sent out quickly because the prison limits reimbursement for stored property to $25 and treats excess or unclaimed property as abandoned after 30 days after discharge.
The person receives a five-digit TID telephone ID and one free phone call after entry into UCM and TID assignment. The call can be local or long distance, but it cannot exceed 10 minutes. An incorrectly dialed number still counts as the one free call. Medical screening is mandatory, and refusal of preliminary physical examination can limit privileges to legal calls and legal visits. Classification then assigns housing based on legal, safety, health, conduct, and programming factors.
Lancaster County Prison Housing
All newly committed people are assigned to the Intake Unit for up to 14 work days. The Classification Committee reviews legal status, age, bail, detainers, out-of-county charges, mental and physical condition, prior incarceration, behavioral record, monitoring, programming requests, and state parole violations. Maximum security is used for serious offenses, state or other-county inmates, serious discipline problems, and control concerns. Medium security is used for intermediate offenses. Minimum security includes overflow, minor offenses, in-house workers, community service, and approved outside employment.
Classification point: Bail amount may not be the sole or controlling factor in housing, and inmates can challenge classification through the inmate request process.
Lancaster County Prison Programs
The prison public-resources page links an inmate rulebook, mission statement, code of ethics, inmate welfare policy, store account policy, commissary menu, prison-statistics material, children of incarcerated parents information, and a reentry resource guide. Intake materials also reference work programs, educational and vocational opportunities, counseling programs, and orientation information in English and Spanish. These sources should be used instead of generic program assumptions.
Medical screening occurs at intake, and treatment staff collect treatment information. The facility includes mental-health unit references in visitation housing, commonly shown as MHU. The county also publishes a PREA hotline, 1-844-429-5412, for suspicion that an incarcerated person is a victim or perpetrator of sexual abuse or harassment. The prison reported February 2025 compliance with Title 37 Chapter 95 after PADOC inspection of housing, classification, security, policy, interviews, safety, sanitation, treatment, education, medical, and food-service areas.
Lancaster County Prison Directions
The facility sits east of central Lancaster City on East King Street. The nearest broad access corridors are PA-462/East King Street through Lancaster, US-30 to the north, and PA-222 or US-222 approaches into city streets. Official prison pages reviewed did not publish route-by-route driving instructions, visitor parking rates, bus-route details, or a separate ADA entrance. Visitors should confirm route, parking, and weather-related visitation status before leaving.
Unauthorized personal items, purses, backpacks, phones, and similar items may be secured in lobby lockers for $0.50 in quarters. The county says LCP is not responsible for loss or damage. Visitors get two chances to clear the metal detector, medical devices or implants require supporting documentation, and leaving the visitation room cancels the rest of the visit.
Note: Confirm custody, housing, visit scheduling, and weather closures before traveling to Lancaster County Prison.
Lancaster County Correctional Facility Project
Lancaster County publishes official resources on a proposed replacement correctional facility. The project pages discuss needs assessment, average daily population projections, population peaks, and bed needs for changing classification demands. Those materials are planning resources, not the current jail roster and not the current facility address. The operating adult facility for Lancaster County remains Lancaster County Prison at 625 E. King Street until official county materials say otherwise.
The county's facility project resource page points to the official project materials for the proposed Lancaster County Correctional Facility.
The project source is useful for long-range capacity context, while current inmate lookup remains tied to Lancaster County Prison and the county inmate-search portal.
